Hello. I am a former college football player - lineman. Haven't played the game in 10 years, but my body is still feeling the effects. Starting in my senior year, I began experiencing back, hip, and leg pain. Like most football players I worked through the pain, but occasionially my back would "go out". Between the high impact of the game and the heavy weight lifting my body really took a beating. When this first started it would last a couple of days to a week. This cycle contined for the next 5 years. I would never know when digging a ditch or bending to pick-up a piece of paper would make me have one of these flare-ups. Finally in 2000, I was working in the garden and bam! - flare up. Only this time it didn't pass after a week - 2 weeks - a month. I was refered to a neuro surgeon. The MRI showed blown disc. I had suregry, but the post op therapy didn't go well. Part my fault - part the lack of post PT options. I started gaining weight and the pain pills became too easy to take. By Feb. 2002, I had gone from 305 to 378lbs. and my back was still hurting and the flare ups still coming. Spent my beach vacation of 2001 laid up in the ER and the beach house bed - it sucked. Everything sucked!! Well, 378lbs - wow I felt, looked, and was awful. I knew I had to make some changes. I went to a diet dr. and with his help I got down to 325lbs. Still, I could exercise due to the back and I knew somethig still wasn't right. In July of 2002, I return to the surgeon and was told I has Stenosis. I am 33 and this wasn't what I wanted to hear, but after PT and no improvement I had another surgery in October 2002. I must say that I am approaching this post op with a totally different attitude. I am eating healthly and now down to 306lbs. Simple diet - meat the size of the plam of the hand, fruit, veggies, and no white bread. I am not perfect and do eat the things we all like, but when I slip I get right back to my simple way of eating healthy. I have lost 72lbs. and I am now getting back in the gym. I went through PT until the first of January. Then I joined the gym. I have had one set back since, but I am determined to keep at it. I am mch better than I have been in years and I plan to keep working. Working at the issue is key. I do find it tough to remember that I am only 5 months post op. I want to be where I was 10 years ago with my fitness and it does get frustrating. I have taken the start from scratch apporach and know that I have to take small steps before I can stide. Well, keep it real folks and if I can make the progress I have then yo can too. Every single days I have ro remind myself of where I was at in 2000 and look at where I am at now. I will beat the back problems and get my back - back.
