To S Braziel: Don't know if you're still checking for replies, since it's been almost two months since your posting, but I just ran across it while looking for back exercises and thought you might be interested in another account. My discectomy (L3/L4) was performed last June 27. I had been unable to run for 7 months prior to that due to sciatic pain in my right leg. My orthopedic surgeon's recommendation was to switch to some non-percussive form of exercise, but he said he had had patients who returned to running and had no ill effects. He did insist on no running for three months after surgery. I started training again last week (10/2), running every other day. My workouts so far have been only 6-mile runs at a very slow pace (9 min./mile), but that is due to lack of conditioning rather than any spinal problems. I still have occasional pain in my right leg, but it is not aggravated by the running, and my doctor and others have repeatedly stressed that nerve trauma takes a long time to heal and the full benefits of the surgery may not be realized for as long as a year (if you're reading this Elaine, stay optimistic!). I'm 52, and my degenerating discs may eventually cause me more problems, but I'm hoping to get back to a regular 70 mile/week training regimen and competive race times before that happens.
