My mom, who has adult-onset diabetes, for which she takes oral medication, not insulin, had lower back fusion from L-1 thru L-5. The surgery lasted much longer than planned (8 hrs.). She complained of pain, which the next day became excrutiating. We assumed it was her back, but found out the 3rd day, that what was causing her the most pain was her feet! She has never had neuropathy. She had no foot pain before the surgery. She has been unable to have either of her feet touched and is unable to move around without crying out. Two nights ago she was given IV steroids(Prednisone). Yesterday morning my Mom re-appeared. Not pain-free, but able to move her feet back and forth, able to have them touched without crying. The doctor had already decided to also have her feet x-rayed, so yesterday afternoon she was taken to x-ray, and with all of the manipulation needed, she was in pain again and her feet were swollen. She was still taking Prednisone orally, but was still touch-sensitive. This morning she was made to stand to get into a chair and is once again in terrible pain. One of her doctors suggested Reflex Sypathetic Dystrophy Syndrom, and it sounds very plausible to me, since my husband has had a wrist problem like that, and it's very similar to the symptoms my mom has. My problem is that the doctor who had this suggestion is out of town for the w/e, and no-one is listening to me when I tell them the pain has only started since the surgery! Diabetic neuropathy isn't an overnight thing. Has anyone had any experience like this that can help me? I'm leaving tomorrow morning to go back to the hospital, and I'm really having trouble finding specific info. Thanks in advance. The crying hysterical woman they are seeing isn't my mom - but I can't seem to convince them she just not being lazy about rehab for the back surgery. Bev
